A Beginner's Guide: How To Skip

  • By Skip Stories
  • 17 Mar, 2017

This how-to guide is for new Skipsters who want to learn how to use Skip and make the most of Skip’s awesome features.
Skip is intuitive by design so you can probably work it out on your own but this in-depth get started guide will help you quickly become a Skip master. If you have any unanswered questions after this guide, shout out and our Australian-based support team will help you.

Get Started Now. Download Skip.

Step 1: Download Skip to upload food and coffee

To start using Skip download the app. Or don’t because you can also open your favourite web browser (provided it isn’t Internet Explorer because that barely counts as a thing), and use Skip at www.skipapp.com.au.

Step 2: Set up your account

Next you need to set up your Skip account. This should take you less than a minute, but if you’re distracted easily, or you enjoy taking breaks, it may take longer. Drop in your details now and skip to the next step. Please note, you’ll fill out payment details when you place your first order. You only need to do this once. Exciting, huh?

Step 3: Search and select your nearest venue

You’re ready to order. You can do it. Use the force…of your finger on the screen. Tap SEE NEARBY VENUE for a list of your nearby-est venues and get ordering! You can also search for a specific venue using the search bar.
Not sure what you want to eat? No worries, mate. Let your stomach decide! Tap EAT SOMETHING and you can let your stomach do the browsing as you peruse food categories like: soup, healthy, noodles, liquid lunch, et cetera. Tap on your stomach’s choice and you can see the nearest venue serving up the goods you most desire.

Step 4: Select and customise your coffee

Order whatever you want, you’ve earned it. Go on, treat yourself—there’s no judgment here, only queuelessness. If you take your strong decaf almond mylk latte with 3 equal, order when ready! If you want your toasted Rueben sandwich without mustard, just use the comments section to say as much. You can fully customise your drink and food orders (obviously some venues may have restrictions on changes to food; E.g. Tabouleh without the parsley; rice-free risotto; fructose-free fruit salad can’t exist), but most are very accommodating especially when it comes to allergies and intolerances.
DISCOVER COMBO DEALS Did you know some venues offer combo deals? Order your coffee first, and once you’ve confirmed your order, you will discover if that venue offers any combo deals. Then just tap on the try a combo button and save!

Step 5: Master time

Are you ready to master time? Simply set your pickup time and don’t let the power go to your head. Choose a suitable pick up time and remember to give yourself some wriggle room on your first go. Not sure how far away you are from the café? Guess, or use Google maps to give you an estimate. The minimum pick up time varies between the venues—you can check on the venue’s Skip profile, but it will usually be 3-5 minutes.

Step 6: Confirm and pay

Paying for anything in person is so Y2K. Once you've confirmed your first order, you'll be prompted to enter your card details (just once), then the cash-handling is forever taken out of your interaction with your barista. You only need to enter your payment details once—it is then securely stored by our payment provider.

Bonus: Quiz time!

HAVE YOU DISCOVERED THE HIDDEN SKIP QUIZ? To test your general knowledge against the Skip super quiz, just scroll down on the confirmation screen after each order you place.

Step 7: Pick up and get down

Are you ready for the fun part? When you arrive at the venue, walk past the queue to where they serve up their take away coffees and your order will be waiting for you on the counter, perhaps even next to the Skip Pick Up sign. If you’re a little early, let them know you ordered on Skip and ask the barista an earnest open-ended question to start a conversation and build what may well become a firm friendship.

Have a question rattling 'round your mug?

Kale chips and cronuts, freak shakes and acai – while still drawing in the crowds, they’re sort of old news. If you’re wondering what the next big things in food and bev trends will be you’re in the right place! Join us as we talk through what’s trending up and down the Aussie east coast.

With health consciousness now being accepted and properly appreciated in society, you can get away with ordering almost any drink you choose without the judgement of your peers – phew! More and more Aussies are going alcohol-free or taking a break from the booze, and to meet the demand the number of non-alcoholic beverages on offer when you’re out and about are only continuing to rise.

Next time you go reaching for that pint, schooner or glass of bubbles; be a little more adventurous and try out one of the many herbal teas, pressed juices, coconut waters, kombucha and other gut-friendly, probiotic-filled goodies that are packed with flavour – minus the nasties.

Alternative lattes
There’s nothing new about dairy free milk options, but when it comes to the classic latte some spots have been spotted taking alternative variations to a whole other level.

From turmeric or golden lattes that are said to possess healing and nourishing qualities, to more experimental and buzz-worthy blue algae or beetroot variations, choosing your morning brew just got a whole lot harder!

If the charcoal theme creeping into many cafés, restaurants and bars is anything to go by, black is well, the new black. If you haven’t already encountered the charcoal influx just yet, it’s likely to come your way soon enough.

Aside from the digestive cleansing benefits activated charcoal is said to have, it sure does get people talking (or gawking from the next table). Expect to find it in any number of forms from burger buns to pressed juices and even fish and chips.

Cookie Dough
Remember all those times you bought the pre-made cookie dough roll and ate it raw? Well now you can and enjoy this sugary treat in all its uncooked glory without the guilt or worry of getting ill! Everyone’s going crazy for cookie dough right now and we anticipate it’s a trend that will only continue to grow in popularity.

Skip has teamed up with CafeSmart in an exciting move!

We’re pulling together the forces of good coffee, goodwill and good-old community spirit to help those experiencing homelessness.

You might not know that 42% of people experiencing homelessness are under 25.

CafeSmart and it’s generous band of cafes are supporting amazing organisations like Youth Futures to help these young people.

“With the support from CafeSmart, we are able to provide young people with care packs which include a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, shower gel, a brush, deodorant, underpants and socks. You would be amazed with the transformation and confidence that can occur immediately once a young person has had access to a good meal, a warm shower and a safe place to sleep for the night." – Youth Futures.

If you had the power to never wait again, would you use it? Most people would say, “of course!”, some may say, “nah, waiting isn’t that bad” but we just think, “why wouldn’t you?” So, we’ll ask you a different question; if you could skip the wait every time you order food and coffee from Australia’s best cafes, would you? Of course you would.

Skip is more than an app that lets you quit queueing for coffee and food. I mean it's pretty great that you can pre-order and pay to save you heaps of time in your busy day, but there's so much more to it.

Cardless, cashless, queueless. It's time to embrace the digital wallet and leave your receipt jammed wallet at home. Skip lets you pay securely online so you can forget about having cash or your wallet next time the need for coffee and food strikes. If your food and coffee is a tax deduction, or you just enjoy keeping track of your expenditure, you'll love Skip’s weekly invoice outlining your expenses.

Skip is also a brilliant way to discover your nearest waitless coffee when you’re exploring new cities or suburbs. If you’ve wandered off the edge of your coffee map, just jump into Skip, tap SEE NEARBY VENUES  and it’ll show you a list of your nearest venues and how far away they are. How good is that? Just tap on the venue for its address and other helpful information such as their brand of coffee or varieties milk, opening hours and venue amenities such as parking, wheelchair access, pet-friendly, pram friendly, etc.

Are you the type of person that gets a rush when the barista tells you they have a loyalty program? Uh huh! Well you can forget about treating that stamped coffee card like a magical ticket to destination caffeination. Skip has built-in loyalty so you never need to keep track of it. And even if you put your phone through the wash, your Skip loyalty will be waiting for you when you log into the app on your new phone.

You'll notice when you've reached your loyalty goal on your regular order with the appearance of a red heart and the word 'Free'. To redeem just order your coffee as usual and it will automatically be redeemed. Magic!

(By the way Kinship & Co in Melbourne’s CBD gives you a free coffee every 5th order and Scout's Honour in Sydney every 7th.)
